Most of the top teams were off Saturday, but there are some huge games coming up this week. LSU and Alabama meet up in Tuscaloosa and that game will likely decide the top team in the country. The loser could be in good shape for a spot in the playoffs though. They would almost certainly miss out on the SEC championship game, but would be a one-loss team in a very good SEC. The big story this week was Oklahoma’s shocking loss to Kansas State. That seriously hurts Oklahoma’s chances to reach the playoffs, even if they manage to win out from here. For now that leaves Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and Clemson in the playoffs. Of course those two SEC teams face off on November 9th and that could change the playoff picture. Alabama moved to 7-0, but lost quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for at least a couple weeks with a high ankle sprain. The good news for the Crimson Tide is that after hosting Arkansas, they have a bye week before hosting LSU on November 9th. That could be the game of the year and decide the winner of the SEC West. There were some huge upsets across the college football landscape on Saturday, but none were bigger than South Carolina shocking Georgia between the hedges. That knocks Georgia out of the playoffs for now and could leave a lot of questions for the selection committee. Right now we project LSU to finish with one regular season loss, at Alabama, and finish the regular season 11-1. The SEC gave us a taste of things to come this week when Florida hosted Auburn in a matchup of top ten teams. The Gators came out on top thanks to the toughness of quarterback Kyle Trask and the elusiveness of running back Lamical Perine. That puts Florida in the mix for a spot in the playoffs. North Carolina nearly shook up the playoff picture, but Clemson managed to beat the Tar Heels 21-20. The Tigers may appear vulnerable now, but there are bound to be some close calls along the way. That left very few upsets in the top 25 this week. Arizona State went to #14 Cal and came away with a surprising win and Oklahoma State knocked off a Kansas State squad that was ranked in some polls. Central Florida’s loss to Pitt has opened up the race for the best team in the AAC, CUSA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt. With a trip to the New Year’s Six bowls on the line, UCF’s thrilling loss to the Panthers is a huge deal for lots of teams. However, the AAC is still the Knights’ to lose and they will still likely be the highest rated team out of those conferences if they can run the table. Perhaps the biggest upsets this week came in the Big Ten. Temple hosted Maryland and made a couple goal line stands to hang on to beat the Terrapins 20-17. In East Lansing, Michigan State fell 10-7 against Arizona State. That was a huge win for the Sun Devils and another tough loss for the Spartans. Without any major upsets, the bowl projections have not changed too much since last week. With Virginia Tech’s win, there are now four six-win teams who will not make a bowl. Joining Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming, Miami (OH) on that unfortunate projected list is Southern Miss. All six win teams in mid-major conferences need to worry. There will not be any 5-7 teams reaching a bowl this season. And having too many bowl eligible teams also makes for nervous waiting for some 6-6 teams in the lower level conferences. At the moment we are projecting Wyoming, Miami (OH) and Louisiana-Monroe to miss out. But of course the individual bowls may have drastically different ideas.
