Not much changed in the bowl picture during championship week. The playoff picture is exactly the same as it was and Penn State, who we had predicted to beat Wisconsin, will likely head to the Rose Bowl. Even Sun Belt teams South Alabama and Louisiana won to earn a spot in the bowl. North Texas and Mississippi State are the only two 5-7 teams in the bowl picture and will get the first opportunity to jump into a bowl game with those two open spots. ...

No matter what happens next week, Alabama and Ohio State should be headed to the playoffs. The Buckeyes are not in the Big Ten title game, but an 11-1 Ohio State team that played a brutal schedule better make the playoffs. If they don’t, we should just say a team has to win the conference title to reach the playoffs, but that is not the point of the selection committee. The bowl picture is beginning to clear up as many teams have reached the magical six win total. It also looks very likely that a few 5-7 teams will again reach the bowls due to a lack of bowl eligible teams. That could benefit a team like Vanderbilt, who has the highest APR score of all the teams likely to finish with five wins. They are sitting at 5-6 right now and host Tennessee this week. The playoff picture was muddled on Saturday as Clemson, Michigan and Washington all lost. However, all three of those teams are still in the mix for a playoff spot. Texas A&M’s foray into the playoff committees top four did not last long. The Aggies went to Mississippi State and lost 35-28. Despite that tough loss, Texas A&M looks in decent shape to make a New Year’s Six Bowl. The trip to Starkville was the last time Coach Kevin Sumlin and company leave College Station. Right now the playoff picture could not be any clearer. There is one undefeated team in each power conference except the Big 12. Certainly that will not last, but for now Clemson, Michigan, Washington and Alabama are the clear playoff participants. There is one other undefeated team out there. The playoff picture finally changed with Penn State’s victory over Ohio State. The Buckeyes are by no means out of the playoff race though. Ohio State has what will likely be an epic showdown against Michigan looming on November 26th, but they cannot look past teams like Nebraska either.
