Oklahoma picked up a thrilling 62-52 victory over rival Oklahoma State on Saturday. That puts the Sooners right back in the mix for a playoff spot. However, that could be short lived with TCU coming to town this week. The Horned Frogs are also sitting at 5-1 in Big 12 play and 8-1 overall. The winner of that game is likely the Big 12’s only remaining playoff hopes.

The Penn State at Ohio State game lived up to the hype. The Buckeyes mounted an impressive comeback to beat the Nittany Lions 39-38. That leaves both teams at 7-1, but gives OSU the huge advantage of being 5-0 in Big Ten play. There is a long way to go, including road trips to Iowa and Michigan, but the Buckeyes are now clearly the favorites to reach the conference championship game from the tough Big Ten East.

The projected participants in the playoffs (Alabama, Penn State, Georgia and TCU) went unchanged this week. It was the Nittany Lions though that made the biggest statement with a 42-13 victory over Michigan in Happy Valley. There were some questions about how good Penn State really is since this was the first ranked opponent they have played all year, but they answered those questions. From top to bottom, the bowls went wild in week seven. The big winners are TCU and Georgia, who replace Clemson and Washington in the playoffs. With the loss by Oklahoma, the playoff picture has moved significantly this week. Of course the Sooners are out and that leaves the Big Ten and the Pac-12 as the potential big winners. Georgia added another big win to their resume with a 31-3 victory against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are now 4-0 and do not play Alabama during the regular season. A trip to Tennessee this week will not be easy, but Mississippi State was not an easy opponent either and Georgia made easy work of that game. Most of the top teams won during week three. Mississippi State and Vanderbilt were the big winners on the day. The Bulldogs dominated LSU in a 37-7 win. They are now in a great position to compete in the SEC West. However, they have road trips to Georgia and Auburn in the next two weeks. Vanderbilt beat Kansas State 14-7 to move to 3-0. The top of the playoff picture has changed very quickly during the first two weeks of the season. Florida State’s loss to Alabama, and more importantly the loss of quarterback Deondre Francois, has put the Seminoles out for now.
