Following their somewhat surprising win over Boston College, Connecticut is now 4-5 and poised to reach a bowl game for the first time since 2015. Week 8 did not shake up the top teams in the bowl projections like last week did. The big winner of the week may end up being Oregon, who picked up a nice 45-30 victory over UCLA. The top spots in the bowl projections finally saw some major changes following an exciting week 7. The biggest of them all came in Knoxville where Tennessee beat Alabama. That moves the Volunteers into the projected playoffs in Alabama’s old spot. The spots in the Big 12 and ACC New Year’s Six Bowls also changed hands. Alabama had a close call against Texas A&M, but stayed perfect with a 24-20 victory. Tennessee and UCLA both got wins over ranked teams. The Volunteers crushed LSU on the road, but they play Alabama next and travel to Georgia next month. If they are going to reach the playoffs, or even a New Year's Six Bowl, they will certainly earn it. The Bruins beat Utah 42-32 and have a week off before heading to Oregon.

Week 5 provided some close calls for the top teams in the nation. Most notable was Georgia’s comeback victory over Missouri. The Bulldogs were down 22-12 early in the fourth quarter, but scored 14 unanswered to remain undefeated. We currently have Georgia projected to face off against Ohio State in the semifinals of the playoffs, with projected top-seeded Alabama going up against Clemson in the other semifinals. Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Cincinnati will be in the playoffs. The only question that remains is the seeding order, but that really will not matter anyway. Alabama or Michigan could be #1, but the Wolverines will have to play Georgia since the committee will not pit two SEC teams against each other. By our count, there are 83 eligible bowl teams for 82 bowl spots. That almost works out nicely. Of course, the big news this week besides Alabama somehow beating Auburn, was Michigan handing it to Ohio State. That drops the Buckeyes out of the playoff picture and sends the Wolverines to the Big Ten Championship game. A win over Iowa and Michigan is in the playoffs. There are 82 teams that will go to bowl games this year, but we project 81 to be bowl eligible. Of course, there are lots of teams who are one win away, but many of those teams happen to play other 5-6 teams to close out the season. That makes for some very important games. While it is not the type of contest Florida and Florida State want to play at the end of their season, the extra practice for the bowl game does mean something. The playoff picture is getting clearer after Oklahoma lost. It seemed inevitable that the Sooners would eventually lose after so many close calls. But that should knock them out of the playoff picture. However, we are starting to run out of teams. Georgia is almost a lock as long as they only lose one game. Two more undefeated teams fell again this week. Michigan State was toppled by Purdue and Wake Forest lost at North Carolina. We still project Ohio State to win the Big Ten and reach the playoffs, so all these upsets have not changed our playoff projections. Baylor also picked up their second loss of the season, knocking them out of playoff contention. However, Michigan State and Wake Forest are not out of the equation just yet.
