UNC Says So Long to Butch
Just a couple of days after Coach Butch Davis was yacking it up with the media during the Atlantic Coast Conference’s media day, the school let him go. The official reason is to stop the damage that has been done to the school’s reputation. Many Tar Heel players endured massive suspensions, mostly during the 2010 campaign, from the NCAA and it has put a black mark on the school.
Apparently the Chancellor, Holden Thorp, and the athletic department wanted that black mark just to disappear. The easy answer is to get rid of Coach Davis. In four years with UNC, Davis only managed a 28-23 overall record, which would have been much better had he had the services of some of the best players in the ACC last season, but still he failed to live up to expectations.
That leaves one big question remaining…what’s next? Well, for now UNC has no choice but to go with an interim coach. That should keep the recruits in town and make things relatively seamless moving forward. And after that the Tar Heels will have little choice but to find a squeaky clean coach with a squeaky clean reputation to help rebuild North Carolina’s newly tarnished reputation.
