Knoxville Region 2014 Softball World Series Breakdown

#10 Tennessee, Lipscomb, Virginia Tech, and Charleston Southern

The Tennessee Lady Volunteers return to the NCAA Tournament once again as the number ten overall seed. They are loaded offensively and are led by Madison Shipman, Annie Aldrete, and Melissa Davin among many others. Senior Ellen Renfroe is back in the postseason spotlight once again in the circle and her veteran experience in big games is going to be invaluable in the postseason as veteran pitchers tend to be able to take over and rise to the occasion. If the Volunteers can come out on fire early in this regional they should have more than enough to be able to advance. The challenge for co-coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly is to make sure Tennessee does not have any letdown in their play like they did in losses to teams like Western Kentucky.

Virginia Tech is back in the NCAA Tournament field for the second year in a row out of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies are going to need to outscore teams in the Knoxville Regional.  They have a team earned run average of 3.21 can but counter it with strong offense, scoring nearly five runs per game. Lipscomb is out of the Atlantic Sun Conference and beat Virginia Tech earlier this season to go along with big wins over Baylor and UAB. The Lady Bisons are led by senior pitcher Ashley Anderson and senior infielder Kristin Sturdivant who has nine homeruns and 41 runs batted in. Charleston Southern comes in as another Cinderella story out of the Big South Conference. They have a sub.500 record overall but when you get hot at the right time, like the Buccaneer have, you never know what can happen in a regional tournament setting.
