Athens Region 2014 Softball World Series Breakdown
#4 Georgia, North Carolina State, UAB, and Chattanooga
Georgia heads into the NCAA Tournament for the 13th consecutive season riding the wave of its first SEC Conference tournament championship. The Bulldogs knocked off Florida, Alabama, and Kentucky enroute to the title and was rewarded with a number four overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Georgia can destroy opposing teams with its power when they are clicking on all cylinders. Sophomore third baseman Alex Hugo has slammed 23 homeruns to pace a Bulldogs offense that has hit 1.46 homerun per game in 2014.
North Carolina State and UAB will be familiar foes for Georgia as the two teams played the Bulldogs during the regular season. The Wolfpack lost 8-0 back on February 21. They are led by junior shortstop Renada Davis who has hit 17 homerun and driven in 33. Consistency in the circle is what will give North Carolina State a chance to move on to the Super Regional. The Blazers split two games with Georgia in Athens back in early March as UAB won 8-0 on March 1 and then lost 10-1 in five innings on March 2. If the Blazers can get past NC State and play the Bulldogs, they will not be an easy out. The trio of Caitlin Attfield and Kristin and Megan McGrath are the sparkplugs to the UAB offense that will be looking to return to the Super Regional round for the second consecutive season. Chattanooga earned the automatic bid from the Southern Conference. The Mocs will ride their pitching as far as they can with sophomore Katie Henderson and junior Taylor Deason., who have helped Chattanooga to a 1.77 earned run average as a team. Georgia is going to have to be locked in to advance out of this tricky regional draw.
