Where is the Pass Happy Offense?
When Coach Sonny Dykes was hired prior to the 2010 season, everyone was waiting for the passing offense to take off. However, Coach Dykes could never settle on a quarterback and the passing offense suffered because of it. Yet, the best player on the team is running back Lennon Creer, who rushed for 1,114 yards and ten touchdowns last season. Thus, the evolution to the pass first, pass last and pass everywhere in-between offense may be on hold for another year.
For now, Louisiana Tech does have their quarterback…in theory, at least. Colby Cameron is not the perfect fit for the offense, but he had a great spring and is the most experienced option this team has. Unfortunately, Cameron’s in game experience has not gone all that well. Last year he threw one touchdown and five interceptions. Junior college transfer Zach Griffin and freshman Nick Isham will push Cameron in the spring, but it is certainly his job to lose. Whoever the quarterback may be, they will have plenty of weapons. Taulib Ikharo, last year’s leading receiver is back, as is Richie Casey. However, the best receivers on the team are Ahmad Paige and Tim Molton, but they need to stay healthy.
For now the Bulldogs will probably remain a balanced offense, but they will need to be a good offense if they hope to reach a bowl game. The defense struggled mightily last season and it is the offense that has to carry this team. Just what the offense will look like remains to be seen. In the spring game, Coach Dykes opened things up a bit and Cameron threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns. That is what one expects from a team coached by Sonny Dykes, but that may not be what is best for Louisiana Tech this season.
