Last Eight In: TCU, Washington, Florida International, New Mexico, Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Ohio State
First Eight Out: Fresno State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Kansas State, USC, Maryland, Baylor, Florida Atlantic
This week’s focus is the northern power conferences. The Big Ten opened conference play this past weekend and the Big 12 started play the week before and both conferences are looking for warmer temperatures. A lot of teams in these conferences are off to slow starts, and that can be attributed to the weather. The Big 12 isn’t made up of all northern teams, but Kansas State and Kansas are. Right now, Kansas is in the field and Kansas State is on the outside looking in. The Wildcats have the talent to make the field, but need to show consistency to do so. They got an answer to pitching problems in Nate Griep, so the future looks bright for them. The Big Ten on the other hand is hard to judge. The conference should get two or three team into the tournament, but those teams are up in the air. Ohio State is in the field, along with Indiana, this week because of the start they are off to. They opened Big Ten play by taking two of three from Michigan State and are in at the moment. Both the Spartans and Nebraska have chances to make the tournament as well based on their performance in non-conference play. The northern picture is blurry right now, but should get clearer as the sun begins to shine.
