Dwight Powell NBA Draft Profile

Dwight Powell NBA Draft Profile

Dwight Powell, Junior, Power Forward, Stanford

Overview:

Dwight Powell is just tapping into his vast potential. The 6-9, 227 pound power forward earned a starting role at Stanford during his freshman campaign in 2010-2011, but he has plenty of room to grow. On the season he averaged 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds and proved to be a capable player in both of those departments.

Powell is also a solid defender and is capable of nabbing some steals and blocking a shot or two on any given day. His defense may not improve too much with time, but his offensive production should. Powell spent quite a bit of time on the perimeter during his freshman campaign, but only connected on 28.0 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. He is not a great shooter, but will knock down more long balls with experience.

Final Projection:

Powell’s problem when projecting to the NBA is his position. Is he a tall small forward with subpar shooting skills or is he a light power forward who can be pushed around in the paint by bigger and stronger opponents? By the time his collegiate career is over, it may not matter too much. Powell is a basketball player and a very talented one. His career may take a different path depending on the improvement of his jump shot or the addition of weight to fill in his 6-9 frame, but either way he has the talent to play at the next level.
