The third week of the season was a statement week for some teams from the lesser conferences. Louisiana-Lafayette started off the week by knocking off top ranked LSU 4-1 in a weather shortened 5 inning affair. Sam Houston State also picked up a big midweek win by winning at Rice. Both teams rode that momentum into the weekend and finished 2-1. Lafayette won a series against SEC foe Alabama, while Sam Houston State beat TCU and Texas Tech in the Houston Classic, before falling to Texas in the final game, 3-2. The impressive weeks saw them both enter the Top 25 and improve their positions in the bracket. They are joined in this week’s bracket by a quartet of new teams who are coming off impressive weeks. Fresno State enters the tournament field after a sweep of Texas A&M in College Station and Seton Hall enters the field as the projected Big East Champ after a sweep of Arizona. Both teams are off to hot starts, as they are 9-2 and 7-2, respectively, on the year. Undefeated weeks also helped Charleston and Tennessee Tech join the field. Charleston is 10-1 on the season, with the lone loss at the hands of North Carolina in a series they won, and Tennessee Tech sits at 11-1 after winning their last ten. The strong weeks from these squads make them teams to watch as the season progresses. And it will be interesting to see how they handle their next challenges.
