Tennessee State at Butler FCS Football 2013 Playoffs 1st Round Game Breakdown

Tennessee State at Butler, Saturday, 1:00

The matchup between Butler and Tennessee State is a game pitting two evenly matched teams up against each other.  Both teams are 9-3 this season and are new to the playoffs, with Tennessee State making its first trip since 1999 and Butler making its first appearance in school history.  Watch the matchup between Butler QB Matt Lancaster and the Tennessee State secondary.  The Tigers have picked off 17 passes this year, led by Daniel Fitzpatrick with six, while Lancaster has thrown for 2,639 yards and only six interceptions.  Butler will look to use Lancaster and their other playmakers to break down Tennessee State’s stingy defense.  RB Trae Heeter has 1,721 all-purpose yards (1,311 rushing and 410 receiving) and WR Brendan Shannon has 978 receiving yards.  They will be keys to the Bulldogs success.  Butler has done well defensively, but struggled against the pass, something Tennessee State’s offense struggles with, as QB Robert Butler has only thrown for 1,343 yards.  Tennessee State has been sound in the running department, with Tim Broughton rushing for 1,046 yards and Telvin Hooks rushing for 669 yards, but Butler only allows 115.9 yards per game.  The game is going to come down to Tennessee State stopping Butler’s playmakers, which will be a real challenge.

Projected Score: Butler 38, Tennessee State 24
