Last Four In: Tennessee State, Southern Illinois, Delaware, South Dakota State
First Four Out: Wofford, South Carolina State, Tennessee Martin, Central Arkansas
While the Missouri Valley Football Conference and Colonial Athletic Association garner much of the attention in the FCS ranks, the Ohio Valley Conference usually is thought to be a notch below those two. But all eyes will be on the OVC this month as it’s possible the league could have three representatives in the playoffs. And if that happens, it could affect the number of playoff berths the CAA , MVFC and even the Southern Conference receive. The OVC’s Eastern Illinois is a lock for one playoff spot, but Eastern Kentucky jumped into the picture this weekend with an impressive 44-0 victory over Tennessee State. The Colonels (6-3) have a huge game at Jacksonville State this weekend, then another big game at home against UT Martin. They finish the season at Murray State. They probably have to win all three to get a berth, but that’s possible. Meanwhile, Tennessee State (7-3) remains in the playoff picture despite the one-sided loss to EKU because it finishes with games against Austin Peay and Murray State – both winnable contests. A 9-3 Tennessee State would have to get serious consideration for a playoff spot, too. So if you have a rooting interest in a team outside the OVC, you better hope that EKU or Tennessee State loses at least one game because they could definitely take a playoff berth away from the other conferences mentioned.
