Gregory Echenique, Senior, Power Forward, Creighton
Overview:
Gregory Echenique signed with Rutgers out of high school and played there for a little over a season. As a true freshman in 2008-2009, Echenique had a superb season, leading all Big East freshmen in rebounding and blocked shots. The 6-9, 270 pound Venezuelan looked like he had a very promising future with the Scarlet Knights and could have built off of his 8.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game average of his freshman year.
However, seven games into his sophomore season, Echenique suffered an eye injury and then opted to transfer. After sitting out the 2009-2010 season as a transfer and with a medical redshirt, Echenique landed at Creighton. It took him some time to fit into the Bluejays system, but he ended his first season with the team averaging 10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.
Final Projection:
With more experience with the Bluejays, Echenique should be more productive. He may not grab as many rebounds as he did with Rutgers since Creighton would prefer to have more than one or two rebounding options, but that does not take away the fact that Echenique is a quality rebounder at any level. With his size, he can eat up a lot of space and do the dirty work under the basket. His offensive game needs a little polishing, but Echenique has a future playing professional basketball.
