The big story of the first weekend of college football was the upsets by FCS schools over what was supposed to be some decent FBS squads. There should be a few more coming up over the next couple of weeks. But we will look at the top of the pecking order. Alabama and Ohio State cruised to relatively easy victories over Virginia Tech and Buffalo, respectively, to stay #1 and #2 in the rankings. However, there were chinks in the armor. The Crimson Tide did not need much offense thanks to the special teams play of returnman Christion Jones, but the unit is going to have to be more productive against Texas A&M in a couple weeks. For the Buckeyes the problem was on the other side of the ball. OSU allowed the Buffalo offense to move the ball effectively during the second and third quarters. The young Buckeye defense is only going to get better, yet will they be ready to handle the dynamic offenses of Wisconsin and Northwestern when Big Ten play begins?
