DeVier Posey, Senior, Wide Receiver, Ohio State
Overview:
DeVier Posey is always a threat to make a big play, but he seems to underachieve on occasion. That was most noticeable during the 2010 campaign. Posey was supposed to be the go-to-receiver, but he was second to Dane Sanzenbacher in catches, yards and touchdowns. He still caught 53 passes for 848 yards and seven touchdowns, which is not bad by any means, but the expectations were certainly higher after a solid 2009 campaign.
It was in 2009 when Posey emerged as quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s favorite target. Pryor threw far less in 2009 and Posey easily led the Buckeyes with 60 receptions for 828 yards and eight touchdowns.
Final Projection:
Posey has the size and the speed to be a number one wide receiver in the NFL. He will run routes with ease and look very smooth while doing it. Posey just needs to prove that he can be consistent as well and that is the one thing that has been a problem on the field. Off the field, Posey is one of four players who will miss the first five games of the 2011 season. Without Pryor around to throw him the ball, Posey may have some trouble getting on the same page as his new quarterback. However, Posey is too good for any quarterback to ignore, especially with so many questions surrounding Ohio State's receiving corps. Once Posey returns in week six, he will likely return to his rightful place as the team's go-to-receiver.
1/5/12 Update:
Following a variety of suspensions, Posey only played three games for Ohio State during his senior season. In those three games he caught 12 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He was one more big play away from being the Buckeyes leading receiver. This team missed him greatly when he was gone. But as far as the draft goes, Posey has to answer some questions about his misdoings at OSU. Physically he is a fine receiver and has the talent to be a second round selection even in a class that is pretty deep at wide receiver.
