NCAA Women’s College World Series notes of interest…
The NCAA is going all-out in catering to the fans attending the Women’s College World Series, which begins Thursday in Oklahoma. In fact, this year there is a hospitality package for WCWS fans that give VIP hospitality before each session, excluding the if necessary sessions. The VIP hospitality, which will be located south of the ASA Hall of Fame Gift Shop and Museum, includes an air-conditioned tent, a food voucher for one tailgate meal with soft drink, cash bar, snacks, outdoor patio with tables and lawn games, daily raffle prize and more.
ESPN has announced the broadcast team for the WCWS and Pam Ward will team with Jessica Mendoza, Beth Mowins and Michele Smith. Holly Howe, a veteran of the WCWS, will be the field reporter for all of the games. Smith and Mendoza will call the first two games Thursday, and Mowins and Mendoza will do the two night games, including top-seeded OU against Michigan at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Mowins, Mendoza and Smith will call the best-of-three finals series June 3-5.
Although she didn’t win the USA Player of the Year Award, Tennessee co-head coach Ralph Weekly said this about third baseman Raven Chavanne: ”A player like her comes along every 10 years. You don’t get those players all of the time. We were lucky enough to have Monica Abbott here who owns most of the NCAA pitching records, and Monica stands alone. But Raven does too.” Raven is batting .468, fourth in the nation, and will lead the Lady Vols Thursday against No. 2 seed Florida (57-7) in the opening round.
