2013 Baseball World Series Eugene Regional Breakdown
#8 Oregon, Rice, San Francisco, South Dakota State
The strength of the Pac-12 Conference showed through with a few programs earning national seeds. Even though the Ducks finished behind Oregon State in the league standings, their 45-14 overall mark was still strong and the 22-8 Pac-12 mark was good enough for second place. Ryon Healy (.322-10-50) leads the Oregon power offense, but there are not too many power bats in this lineup and Oregon only hit .260 as a team. This could pose problems down the road, but for now Oregon is happy to be the eighth seed. Tommy Thorpe (7-4, 2.22) and Cole Irvin (11-3, 2.61) lead Oregon’s pitching staff. The Ducks have a 22-7 home record and that could be an advantage against teams that have to make the long trek to Eugene.
Rice (41-17) tied Southern Mississippi for first place in Conference USA and earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Owls are perennial visitors to the NCAA tournament, with 19 straight trips to the big show. Only Miami, Florida State and Cal State Fullerton have made more consecutive trips than Rice, led by Michael Aquino (.323-8-42) and Michael Ratteree (.288-9-41). Austin Kubitza (8-4, 2.03) earned triple-digit strikeouts (119) this year. San Francisco (34-22) tied for second in the West Coast Conference and qualified for its third NCAA berth. Bradley Timmer (.335-7-36) stole 18 bases this season, and Zachary Turner (.335-8-62) provided the pop in the bat. South Dakota State (35-22) was second in the Summit League, which was good enough to qualify for the tournament for the first time in school history. Stephen Bougher (8-2, 2.69) leads the pitching staff.
