2013 Softball World Series Mobile Regional Breakdown
#13 South Alabama, Florida State, Mississippi State, Mississippi Valley State
A very good year by South Alabama provides the 45-7 (17-3 Sun Belt) Jaguars home field advantage in the Mobile Regional. Coming in hot, the Jags have won 16 straight including the last three by shutout. The pitching tandem of Hannah Campbell and Farish Beard have yielded just 56 earned runs in 45 games on the season while giving up only 15 home runs. Brittany Fowler, Haley Fagan and Julie Moss all hit over .350, and USA stole 54 bags as a team. The Jaguars played a tough schedule and tallied wins over then-#5 LSU (12-5), and soon-to-be regional contenders #21 FSU (4-0) and Mississippi State (3-2) earlier this year.
Florida State checks in at #24, had the ACC #1 seed in the conference tournament and lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in the championship game. Sophomore Lacey Waldrop’s 1.47 ERA and 222 strikeouts kept the ‘Noles in every game. Senior Monica Perry is the other half of the pitching staff, with a 2.08 ERA. The 41-16 FSU squad (18-2 ACC) boast a Top 25 Scoring Offense led by Morgan Bullock, (Senior, OF, .358 BA, 23 RBI) and Courtney Senas, (Junior, OF, .349 BA, 14 HR, 52 RBI, 16 SB.) The ‘Noles success may depend on the deep ball-FSU is 30-2 when hitting 2 home runs or more in a game, but 11-13 when the ball doesn’t leave the yard. Mississippi State won 32 games on the year against 22 losses, but struggled in the SEC, going 8-16. Among those wins, though, were LSU, Alabama and Florida, all 1 run victories. The Bulldogs rely on the offense led by Junior catcher Sam Lenahan, (.336 BA, 10 HR, 40 RBI) and the pitching of Alison Owen (2.04) who transferred in from University of Georgia. The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes (25-30, 11-6), winners of the SWAC, round out the field and come in on a five game winning streak. Alex Robertson hit .387 with 13 homers. They will need offense to counter a team 3.29 ERA.
