Looking Forward to Baseball's Opening Day
Happy New Year baseball fans! Opening day is the most exciting time of the year for players, fans, and coaches alike. It rivals Christmas and their birthday as the best day of the year. There is nothing more special, in any sport, than opening day in baseball. Everyone has a fresh start, which means new opportunities. Players are able to officially move past last year’s struggles as last year means nothing and everyone is focused on this year. Best of all, everyone has a positive attitude because baseball is a game where anything can truly happen. There is an energy and excitement in the air that is unprecedented in any sport as players expect to play better and go further in the tournament than prior years. Last year’s accolades mean nothing. Last year’s winner, the Arizona Wildcats, are no longer a champion, a coveted spot that every collegiate baseball team across America has their eye on. But they are just a former champion, which right now is nothing but a note in the record books. Will the Wildcats be able to repeat? Pac-12 rivals UCLA, Oregon, and Stanford will certainly be a road block and could overtake the Wildcats. Or will one of the Florida teams, the Gators or the Seminoles, prove to be too strong and win the crown? South Carolina, who won the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Championship and lost in last year’s final game, is seeking revenge. Will they get it this year and notch a third championship in four years? Not if the likes of other ultra talented SEC teams, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, LSU, and Mississippi State have any say it in. But we all know anything can happen in the crazy, beloved game we all know as baseball. So who will surprise us this year and be able to crown themselves champions with a World Series victory in Omaha? It’s just opening day, everyone has the same record, so everybody has the same dreams of glory.
