Erick Green, Senior, Point Guard, Virginia Tech
Overview:
It’s never easy playing basketball at Virginia Tech. The Hokies bring in very few top recruits since they are clearly and inarguably a football school. Thus, the talents they do manage to bring in are always forced to go at things, for the most part, alone. Erick Green is just the next man in the line of VT guards who have been forced to do it all at Tech and carry the team on their shoulders for seasons at a time.
These facts lead to Green being very comfortable controlling an offense, taking big shots and being targeted in pressure situations: all great point guard skills. He also has tremendous size for a point guard at 6’4” and is a stud free throw shooter. The assist numbers are low simply because he has very few options of teammates who can score after a pass.
Final Projection:
Those are the positives. The negatives will keep Green out of the first round of the draft. He is not speedy; nor does he display elite athleticism. He has a bit of a funky shot release and is nothing special from behind the arc. And while Virginia Tech’s entire offense has run through him and will most likely continue to do so during his senior year, the Hokies have been terrible on offense for some time now. They struggle to score in the half court, something a choice point guard should be able to solve.
