Texas A&M Aggies
Big 12 (39-16, 16-8)
Statistically speaking, Texas A&M is not all that impressive. However, the only statistics that really matter are wins and losses and the Aggies have amassed a pretty impressive resume. Coach Jo Evans has done a great job during her 16th season at the helm of Texas A&M and stuck around in the Big 12 race until the very end. With a little small play and keeping the mistakes to a minimum, this is a team that can make some serious noise during the tournament.
Big Wins: 2/11 vs Arizona (5-4), 4/14 vs Oklahoma (4-0), 4/26 vs Texas (9-0)
Bad Losses: 2/25 vs Pacific (0-2), 2/26 vs Houston (2-3), 4/7 vs Iowa State (1-2)
Coach: Jo Evans (16 seasons at Texas A&M)
Why They Can Surprise:
The Aggies do all of the little things to win games. And when the bright lights of the NCAA Tournament are shining, that can very easily be the difference between winning and going home. The team statistics may not be all that impressive, but some of the individual players are having solid seasons. Sophomore Emily Albus is batting nearly .400 and Brittany Walker and Cassie Tysarczyk are both hitting over .300. Tysarczyk is one of the power hitters on this team as well. But there are others, most notably Meagan May, Nicole Morgan, Amber Garza and Mel Dumezich. Dumezich, a junior, is the biggest threat to leave the yard, but she does so much more for the Aggies than hit.
Why They Can Disappoint:
Dumezich is also pretty much the only pitcher the Aggies have. If she does not take the mound during a game it is an oddity. Few teams rely on one single player as much as Texas A&M relies on Dumezich. If anybody was going to build a team around one player, Dumezich would be on the top of their list, but it is not always a good thing. Coach Evans does not have many other experienced options on the mound. Senior Lindsey Sisk is not a bad pitcher and has had some quality outings, but she has pitched about a quarter of the innings Dumezich has this season. That means Dumezich will carry all of the pressure and one bad outing from her and the Aggies could be in big trouble.
