UCLA Bruins
Pac-12 (36-18, 12-12)
The Bruins are one of the most superior offensive teams in the country and lead the way in several categories including team batting average and homeruns per game. Led by freshman phenomenon Stephany LaRosa, who is 6th in the nation with a .445 batting average, 20th in the nation with 16 homeruns and 8th in the nation with 60 RBI’s and senior outfielder Katie Schroeder, who is 33rd in the nation with a .412 batting average and leads UCLA with 16 stolen bases. However, senior infielder Samantha Camuso has added 13 homeruns and 48 RBI’s, senior utility player Andrea Harrison added 14 homeruns and 46 RBI’s and junior outfielder B.B. Bates 14 homeruns and 48 RBI’s.
Big Wins: 4/14 vs Washington (5-0), 5/4 vs Arizona (10-4), 5/5 vs Arizona (7-2)
Bad Losses: 2/25 vs Fresno State (3-6), 3/2 vs Michigan (3-5), 3/3 vs Auburn (1-11)
Coach: Kelly Inouve-Perez (6 seasons at UCLA)
Why They Can Surprise:
Offense, offense and more offense! The Bruins have assembled one of the most powerful offenses in the country with 81 total homeruns and 367 runs scored. They have only been shut out twice this season, both times to number one ranked and Pac 12 leader California.
Why They Can Disappoint:
While offense wins fans, defense wins championships. UCLA is making nearly an error per game and their pitchers, while talented, are still young and lack the polish of some of their rivals. If UCLA wants to make a run for the championship the pitching of sophomore Jessica Hall and freshman Ally Carda will have to mature quickly and their defense will have to tighten up. However, we should see this team climb in the ranking over the next couple of years.
