Jake Matthews, Junior, OT, Texas A&M
Overview:
Jake Matthews is a giant of a young man, standing 6’5 and tipping the scales at 305 pounds. As a freshman he got his chance to play when an injury thrust him into the starting lineup. He played very well, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 and was named to the ESPN All Big 12 freshman team. With the help of his teammates, Texas A&M allowed just 14 sacks in their final seven games, a 180 degree turnaround from the previous six games, where they surrendered 23 sacks. He followed his freshman season with another solid performance in his sophomore year, protecting the 8th overall selection of the draft, Ryan Tannehill.
Final Projection:
Matthews has ideal size for a tackle. He has lots of experience anchoring the blind side and should be a first round selection when he takes his talent to the next level. Scouts will be looking for him to remain consistent. He needs to continue to work hard and build his strength. If Matthews plays well and shows that he plays with a mean streak, he should be a first round selection, especially considering how well he pass protects.
