Duquesne’s Andre Marhold
Duquesne has some work to do in the frontcourt with the departure of Damian Saunders and Bill Clark. The lone returning forward on the roster is junior Andre Marhold. As a freshman he played in just 18 games, averaging less than a point and rebound per contest. Last season he played in a few more games, 20 in all, but still averaged just 8.0 minutes per contest.
Marhold is a superb athlete and could either play the five spot in Coach Ron Everhart’s up and down style or the four spot when the team needs to play a little bigger. Marhold is not that big at 6-7 and 210 pounds, but that is fine for the Dukes. This is a team that plays small and runs and has done so successfully in years past. However, they need a forward to step up and hit the glass and preferably, do some scoring as well. That will be the difference between a Duquesne team that can compete for an A-10 title and a team that could slide a long way down the pecking order.
Is Marhold ready to shoulder a bigger load and become the next Saunders? He has the potential, but has failed to live up to it thus far. But that does not change his potential. He has been stuck behind some pretty good players, but there was certainly room for him to play some more as an underclassman. For a quick peek at what Duquesne has been waiting for with Marhold for the last two years, here is a short highlight reel of what Marhold could do two years ago.
