High Expectations at Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Sooners are the preseason number one team in the nation according to the Associated Press (number two in the College Sports Madness ranking). Head Coach Bob Stoops has put together a talented group of players capable of traversing their way to the National Championship game. The Sooners starting quarterback is a Heisman frontrunner, a passer likely to eclipse 300 yards week in and week out. Stop me if you’ve heard this story before.
But this year will be different. No longer will Oklahoma think of themselves as the front-running favorite. They will go into each game never looking past their current opponent. They will rely on a hardnosed defense and turn to their passing game to open up lanes in the running attack. The Sooners know they must prove to the rest of the country they are worthy of that number one ranki…..oh, you’ve heard THIS story before also?
No matter, because Bob Stoops is the man on the sidelines. He is past his big game struggles. Previous bowl game failure has only strengthened his resolve and made him wiser as a head football coach. Nothing will be taken for granted in Oklahoma’s game plan this year, especially in those very important conference matchups. Coach Stoops is no longer a man who falls short of expecta…..oh come on! You’re telling me this has also been said before?
Okay well, the Oklahoma Sooners are the number one team in the nation heading into the season. They have talent and experience both on the field and on the sidelines. They are sure to make a prestigious bowl game played on or around the first of the new year. There is just that lingering feeling, from non-Sooners fans and Sooners fans alike, that OU will come up a bit short, just a tad, of these preseason expectations. Not that a BCS bowl game loss is a guarantee but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
