What Could Have Been at Georgia
Imagine a team with Dustin Ware running the point, Gerald Robinson and super freshman Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on the wings. Add an undersized, but very effective, Travis Leslie at the four and Trey Thompkins under the basket. That would be an undersized team, but a very quick and talented team that would be ranked in the top 25 at the least.
However, Leslie and Thompkins opted to split Georgia and enter the 2011 NBA Draft. In retrospect, they may have been better off returning to the Bulldogs for another season since both were drafted in the second round. Yet, the story might have been the same in the 2012 draft since that class seems to be much more talented. In the end, Leslie and Thompkins took a chance on the 2011 draft and nobody can blame them for that. Thompkins ended up being drafted 37th overall by the Clippers and Leslie went ten picks later…also to the Clippers.
They may be teammates again, but being teammates at Georgia would have been a lot more pleasing to Bulldog fans. Instead of a team that will compete for an SEC title, Georgia and Coach Mark Fox are in a little rebuilding mode. The future still looks bright with players like Caldwell-Pope coming into the program, but Georgia may remember this as the year they could have made a great run in the NCAA Tournament but ended up with a trip to the CBI or the CIT instead…and that is if they are lucky.
