Saturday kicked off the college football bowl season and arguably betting on bowl games is not the simplest task. There are several factors at play with bowl games that don’t involve college football playoff teams. You have teams playing with interim coaches due to coaching changes such as Houston, South Florida, Western Kentucky and others. On the other side of the equation there are teams that are happy to be bowling like Army, Vanderbilt, Miami (OH), South Carolina, Boston College and Vanderbilt, who are going to be plenty motivated to win and take advantage of the extra bowl practices.
Then there teams with situations like Minnesota and Oklahoma that are racked with controversy and the Golden Gophers finally backed off of their boycott of the Holiday Bowl in response to ten players who are suspended due to an ongoing university investigation of a sexual assault incident. In the case of the Sooners, you have the late suspension of Joe Mixon So, with the Holiday Bowl and Sugar Bowl you have two games that are two extremely difficult games to make bets on as you don’t know how well prepared both teams will be in their respective games.
Thus, Washington State and Auburn could very well become two of the most likely teams to bet on winning the Holiday and Sugar Bowl as Luke Falk should be able to shred the Minnesota defense and, if the Tigers are healthy offensively, they should be able to pound the ball down the Sooners and get a very important season ending victory.
Now, for those teams going through coaching changes and are playing in bowl games, it is simply going to boil down to good old fashioned motivation even though the current staff is moving on. For those players that are still returning for the following season there should still be plenty of motivation to put out plenty of quality game tape to make a good initial impression on the new staff.
