Keenum Still Fantasy’s #1

Last year there was no question who the top fantasy football player was heading into draft time. Everybody who was fortunate enough to draw the first overall pick selected Case Keenum, quarterback out of Houston. Three weeks later, their team was pretty much done for as Keenum went down with an injury. Those who were lucky enough to pick up Terrance Broadway on waivers, or were smart enough to draft him as a safety valve, had to go with a third option when Broadway went down with a season ending injury of his own. David Piland had a decent season, throwing for 2,641 yards and 24 touchdowns, but it was usually not the original owners of Keenum who ended up with Piland on their team. Nor did Piland put up numbers that were in anyway comparable to Keenum.

Back in 2009, Keenum threw for 5,671 yards and 44 touchdowns. He added 158 rushing yards and four more trips to the end zone on the ground. Fantasy owners were expecting the same result in 2010. Instead, they got hosed big time and most fantasy teams were unable to recover.

While it is unlikely Keenum will match his 2009 numbers, he is still the best fantasy player out there. As much as some owners who got stuck with Keenum last year will have second thoughts about drafting him again this time around with the #1 overall pick, they really do not have a choice. Well they do have a choice, but they will probably regret it.
