Last week’s action was headlined by the Dodgertown Classic. There were three top ten teams in the four team event, UCLA, TCU and Vanderbilt, but it was USC that stole the show. The Trojans went 3-0 on the weekend, beating TCU and Vanderbilt in walk off fashion, before topping UCLA 8-4 in the final game of the weekend. USC is now 15-1 on the season, including other big wins over Cal State Fullerton and Kentucky, and slide into a host slot for a regional. As for the other three schools, there should be no worries. Yes UCLA went winless and Vanderbilt won just once, but they are national powers that have played very well this season and all three should be national seeds at the end of the season.
Two teams joined the field for the first time this week in Nevada and UNC Wilmington. Nevada sits atop the Mountain West at the moment with a 13-2 record and has a nice road win over Texas Tech on their resume. UNC Wilmington improved to 9-4 on the season after taking two of three from Maryland. The Seahawks’ four losses on the year come at the hand of Florida State, three times, and Maryland. That’s a nice start for the program and the Seahawks start has them poised to make the CAA a two bid league.
