Michigan Lands Monumental Recruit in Mitch McGary
Five-star prospect Mitch McGary made it official Thursday and committed to the Michigan Wolverines. After speculation pegged the Top 5 prospect in Ann Arbor for quite some time now, the 6'11" 250 pound power forward made it official in an ESPNU press conference. He picked the Wolverines over college hoops heavyweights Duke and Florida.
The Brewster Academy (NH) standout and Indiana native becomes a program reviving recruit for head coach John Beilein the moment he steps on campus. He becomes the program's highest rated recruit to sign with Michigan since Ann Arbor Pioneer High School's LaVell Blanchard in 1999.
He will bring an immediate toughness to the Wolverines, who have lacked an inside star for years now. He will be a dominant force in the Big Ten starting in his freshman season. He plays with a relentless motor and uses his body to score and rebound the ball at a high rate, becoming a double-double threat immediately for the Wolverines from day one.
One of the main reasons he decided to attend Michigan is the chance of leaving a lasting imprint on the program. While Duke and Florida churn out stars yearly, UM hasn't been a powerhouse in college basketball since the days of the Fab Five. His trust for the coaching staff also lured him to Big Ten country. Mark November 3rd, 2011 as a big day in the history of Michigan's basketball program.
