James Vandenberg Earns Madness Player of the Week Honors

College Sports  Madness once again looks to the state of Iowa for their Offensive Player of the Week. This time it is James Vandenberg of the Hawkeyes. Down 24-3 late in the third quarter and 27-10 in the fourth quarter to Pittsburgh, it looked like Iowa was going to slip into mediocrity following their disappointing loss of the CyHawk Trophy a week earlier. But Vandenberg had other plans. In the third quarter he rushed for a touchdown. But in the fourth quarter he willed Iowa to victory with a little help from his receivers…not to mention the defense. Down 17 with a little over 12 minutes left in the game, Vandenberg started heaving the ball down the field and orchestrated the biggest comeback in Iowa history. In the fourth quarter alone he threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns. On the game he threw for 399 yards and accounted for all four Iowa touchdowns. The clincher came with a 22 yard touchdown pass to Kevonte Martin-Manley with 2:51 left in the ball game that gave Iowa the 31-27 victory. Next week, College Sports Madness’ Offensive Player of the Week will travel outside of the state of Iowa, barring Marcus Coker actually living up to his hype…and then some.
